Hallucination
A hallucination is when an artificial intelligence (AI) tool produces an answer that sounds confident and plausible but is simply wrong or made up. The tool is designed to generate fluent text, and sometimes that fluency runs ahead of the facts, inventing a quote, a figure or a source that does not exist.
It is like a smooth talker who would rather give a convincing answer than admit they do not know. Hallucination matters because the mistakes are easy to miss precisely because they read so well, so anything important an AI tells you needs checking against a reliable source.
