Equity
Equity is ownership in a business, usually divided into shares, and holding it means owning a slice of the company and its future value. If you own a fifth of the shares, you own a fifth of the business, with a matching claim on what it is worth and often a say in decisions.
It is like owning part of a house rather than renting it: you gain if its value rises and share the risk if it falls. Equity matters because giving it to investors or staff hands away a permanent piece of the company, so it is valuable and worth parting with thoughtfully.
